This week’s Simply Shakespeare comes from me! I’m reviewing a wonderful book I got sent and have since fallen in love with, Cauldron’s Bubble by Amber Elby. The author herself sent me the book in exchange for an honest review and I am so excited to tell you why this is the book that, if you’re a Shakespeare fan, you didn’t even know you needed…
SO recently, my wonderful fellow Shakespeare nerd Katherine (Discovering Shakespeare) recommended the No Hold’s Bard podcast to me. I’ve been really enjoying it and one I listened to was where they talked about fan theories. One theory, which I am keen to do a separate Simply Shakespeare post on at some point was that all the plays of Shakespeare are connected or exist in the same the same universe (kind of like The Pixar Theory) and this is Amber’s concept in a nutshell and let me tell you, it’s a real treat!
The story follows Alda who Wizard-Of-Oz style finds herself in the magical mystical world of Shakespeare! She meets Dreng and we the reader are taken on an adventure of twists and turns through a brand new world you’ll find yourself wishing you could wake up in. I found myself letting out a little squeak whenever we were introduced to our most loved characters and we get to see characters from Hamlet, Macbeth and The Tempest. I most enjoyed the bits with the Tempest characters, particularly Caliban and Ariel. Its a well crafted story where a true deep love for Shakespeare shines through.
This was the first book in a trilogy and I am so excited for Alda to make Cauldron’s Bubble and return to the world! I’m excited to learn more about her grandmother and see the fallout of what happened in the first book. It feels like The Lion The Witch and The Wardrobe in the way that Alda finds herself wanting to go back to the world, but was the world even there? Did she just imagine it or does magic really exist?
I wish I could gush more about this but it’s hard without it being full of spoilers! Part of the joy of this book is the excitement you feel when reading the name of a character you know so well. This book is for super fans by a super fan and it’s so nice because you aren’t sat through pages and pages of explanation of who the people are because the idea is that you already know them. It’s the book I never knew I needed until I read the first couple of pages.
Amber is a wonderful woman and a fabulous writer and I cannot wait to have her on a couple of Simply Shakespeare posts in the future. You can follow her on Twitter here. You can buy Cauldron’s Bubble on Amazon UK here. Trust me Simply Shakespeare readers, you will not regret it!
