My Top 10 Disappointing Reads of 2018

I pondered over doing a post like this for a long time. It does feel like it’s negative for the sake of being negative, however, I prefer watching these videos on Booktube as opposed to 2018 favourites, so figured I would give it a go. A lot of these are books I expected more from, they aren’t bad books by any stretch of the imagination, there was just something missing for me. If you loved these books, I’m so glad! But at the end of the day, if we all liked the same books, the online book community would be pretty boring, don’t you think?

Easy Prey by Catherine Lo

Rating: DNF

I was really excited for this! It seemed like it was going to be so interesting and intense. For me though, it just didn’t click. The writing style just didn’t work for me and it was just very hard to read. I’m sure this will be right up some people’s street, just wasn’t my jam.

An Island Christmas by Jenny Colgan

Rating: ★★★

I LOVE Jenny Colgan’s books and I was really looking forward to this one. For me, it just fell a bit flat. It felt like too much was packed into the plot and some of it felt insensitive. It won’t put me off her work though!

Little Black Book: A Toolkit For Working Women by Otegha Uwagba

Rating: ★★

This was distinctly meh. I was looking forward to something to inspire me and spur me on. Instead I got everything that was basic common sense. There was nothing new in here for me, I didn’t learn anything. I think this will  be great for school leavers though!

She Must Be Mad by Charly Cox

Rating: ★★★

I thought I would fall in love with this, but a lot of it just went over my head? When I met Charly she was so so lovely so I’m not ruling out trying more of her work in the future!

My Mum Tracey Beaker by Jacqueline Wilson

Rating: ★★★

To be fair, I am not the audience for this and I acknowledge it BUT this was missing some Beaker magic. Maybe I expected too much but this was just a bit of a dud.

Emergency Contact by Mary H.K Choi

Rating: ★★★

This one seemed like it would be SO up my street. Older YA, writing, romance. Yep yep…nope. It just didn’t work and I don’t know why. I think it would have worked better as a single POV.

Gross Anatomy by Mara Altman

Rating: ★★★

I was really looking forward to this but rather than making me feel empowered for having “gross” bits, it made them feel well…gross. I don’t know. It all seemed a bit superficial for some reason.

The Man Who Didn’t Call by Rosie Walsh

Rating: ★★★

This was another that seemed right up my alley. Unfortunately, the plot fell a bit flat for me and the dual timeline left me feeling really confused. It just didn’t work.

Misfit by Charli Howard

Rating: ★★

Another body-posi memoir I was looking forward to. I was really interested in hearing about the author’s struggle with anorexia but it was so hard to relate too and felt really alien to me. Totally forgettable.

Remix by Non Pratt

Rating: ★★★

I am SO SO SO excited to read Non’s other books and this showed a LOT of promise but the characters got on my nerves SO much, it was so difficult to enjoy this book. I know the future holds many a great Non book for me though.

  1. You’re such a genius for DNFing Easy Prey. I really should’ve done that too. It’s so intriguing to see Emergency Contact on your list! I think I have that one on my Goodreads to-read list, because it seemed like something I’d like too. I think I’ll lower my expectations if I do decide to pick it up.
